Wildlife Watching
One of Patagonia’s great wildlife experiences: observing southern right whales in the protected waters of Península Valdés.
Overview
Península Valdés is one of Argentina’s main destinations for southern right whale watching. During their breeding season, these cetaceans arrive in the protected waters of the Golfo Nuevo and Golfo San José to mate, give birth and raise their calves. The experience allows visitors to observe the whales in their natural environment, always under the conditions and protocols established for the activity. Sightings may include mothers with calves, adult whales and different behaviours at the surface. Whale watching is usually integrated into a full day exploring Península Valdés, combining the Patagonian steppe landscape, the Atlantic coast and, depending on the time of year and the planned itinerary, other wildlife-watching opportunities. Navigation is subject to weather and sea conditions.
